6063 vs 6061 vs 6005A Aluminium: Which Alloy for Your Line

For an extrusion buyer the choice between 6063 vs 6061 vs 6005A aluminium is the single decision that sets your surface quality, your strength ceiling and the quench capacity your line must have. All three are 6xxx-series alloys built around magnesium and silicon, but their balance of extrudability and strength is very different. This guide gives you the chemistry, the T5/T6 numbers and the practical selection logic we use when sizing equipment for customers.

Chemistry and how it drives behaviour

The 6xxx family precipitates its strength from magnesium silicide (Mg2Si). More magnesium and silicon, plus small copper and chromium additions, raise strength but also raise the squeeze pressure needed at the press and the speed of quench required afterwards.

  • 6063 — low Mg/Si (~0.7% Mg, ~0.4% Si): easy to extrude, excellent finish.

  • 6061 — higher Mg/Si plus ~0.15–0.4% Cu and 0.04–0.35% Cr: strong but harder to push.

  • 6005A — mid-range Mg/Si with a little Mn: a strength/extrudability compromise.

Extrudability versus strength trade-off

Extrudability describes how fast and thin you can push a section at a given press force. 6063 flows readily and gives the thinnest, most complex architectural profiles. 6061 needs more pressure and runs slower, which lowers die life and throughput. 6005A sits between them — often the pragmatic answer when 6063 is not strong enough but 6061 is too difficult to run in volume.

Surface finish and anodising response

6063 earns its popularity in doors, windows and curtain wall largely because it anodises to a clean, even tone. Its lower alloy content means fewer intermetallic particles to disrupt the oxide layer. 6061 and 6005A anodise acceptably but tend to show more brightness variation, so they are often specified for painted or structural roles where the raw tone matters less.

Quench sensitivity is the hidden constraint

Both 6061 and 6005A are quench-sensitive: their soluble phases must be frozen in by rapid cooling straight from the press. A weak or delayed quench drops strength and can hurt corrosion resistance. That is why a capable cooling bed and a properly sized water or mist quench are not optional when you run these alloys in volume.

  • 6063 — window and door frames, curtain wall, decorative trim, heat sinks.

  • 6005A — rail transit structures, solar frame reinforcing, medium-strength framing.

  • 6061 — NEV battery trays and structural members, bridges, ladder sections, machined parts.

Price and billet availability

All three draw from the same billet supply chain, so price differences are modest and shift with alloying additions and mill minimums rather than scarcity. 6063 billet is the most widely available and cheapest to buy in small lots; 6061 and 6005A cost a little more and may carry longer lead times at smaller diameters. Choose on property needs first, then confirm billet supply for your wall thicknesses.

Is 6005A stronger than 6063?

Yes. 6005A-T6 typically reaches a tensile strength of about 270–300 MPa, sitting between 6063-T6 at roughly 240 MPa and 6061-T6 at about 310 MPa. It is a common choice where 6063 is too weak but 6061 is harder to extrude.
